Proskills is one of the 25 Sector Skills Councils (SSCs) that have been set up by Government to address skills gaps in industry. Proskills works for the Building Products, Coatings, Extractive and Mineral Processing, Furniture, Furnishings and Interiors, Glass and Glazing, Paper and Print Industries.  Our task is to represent the interests of our employers and to champion skills in the process and manufacturing sector.  We are led by our employers to be their voice on skills.

A key focus of any SSC is to ensure that future and current workforces are equipped with the skills industry requires by ensuring that training provision meets demand. This is achieved through consultation with employers to ensure the development of appropriate and industry-relevant standards and qualifications including fit-for-purpose Apprenticeship Frameworks. We work in partnership with training providers and other bodies to ensure that effective and industry-relevant provision is in place and accessible across industries UK-wide. We have the ‘ear’ of government and are therefore able to exercise leverage on the government skills and funding policies, ensuring that they take account of the needs of our industries.

Proskills primary role is to demonstrate the business case for training through detailed research and provision of robust Labour Market Information. We encourage employers to invest in their workforce through training and help them to diagnose their exact training needs in line with current and anticipated business needs. We can also assist in identifying the right training provision and delivery solution and guide employers towards funding to support the costs of that training. Mindful of the need to ensure a future workforce – we work to raise the profile of the sector and to encourage new entrants through a dedicated careers website www.prospect4u.co.uk and careers resources  IChoose and PrintIT!  (a competition linked to the GCSE in Graphics and Product Design) together with our work in the development of a Manufacturing Diploma set to  hit schools in 2009, we are able to showcase the wealth of career pathways and opportunities our industries have to offer.
