Skillfast-UK is the Sector Skills Council for fashion and textiles. Its "footprint" covers all aspects of the clothing, footwear and textile supply-chain - except for retailing. This includes fashion designers, clothing and textile manufacturers, wholesalers and laundries/dry-cleaners.
Fashion and textiles is a dynamic sector, which has altered dramatically in recent years, with the rise of mass manufacturing in the Far East. The UK sector now focuses on world-renowned signature brand designers (such as Vivienne Westwood or Jasper Conran), luxury brands (such as Scottish cashmere), manufacturers for hi-tech specialist markets (did you know you can "weave" an aircraft wing?), and fast-turnaround producers (from pattern-piece to Marks and Spencer's shops in six weeks!). There are also many craft designer/makers working in the sector.
